What is a Soul, Anyway?

If a five year old asked what a soul was, what would you say?

Would you say it’s the truest, deepest part of us that’s inside and outside us at the same time?

Or that a soul is an eternal part of us that never dies and and links us to the rest of the universe?

Perhaps you might say a soul is the sparkle that everyone has and it keeps sparkling even after we die. Sometimes you can see the sparkle with your inside eyes.

However a soul is understood, one thing’s for sure, we all have one.

Just as food sustains our physical body, our soul sustains us with warmth from our spiritual home. The times we remember our spiritual home are when the wonders of the world fill us with awe:

* Sharing a sun rise
* Puppies and kittens playing on youtube
* Gazing into your lover’s eyes.
* Listening to an uplifting song.
* Attending a spiritual church service
* Funky coincidences that feel like more than coincidences.

Then there are times we feel as far from our own soul as we are to Mars. A traffic ticket, an argument with someone special, a broken plate.

Maybe a serious illness, a divorce or someone dies. It feels like a piece of the soul is chipped off, and as much as we love the idea that we’re in control, it’s the punchline that gets a laugh from God every time.

Imagine you’re an iceberg.

The very tip of your iceberg self is the part above the water that you know. It feels enough to some, and indeed it is.

But what of those more curious – who feel the presence of more of their own particular iceberg under the water?

That’s when meditation comes in.

One of the goals of meditation and spiritual growth is to touch our own soul, by sitting quietly.

In a way that’s pretty much it, but anyone who practiced meditation knows there’s a lot more. Like the iceberg under the water, we meet our own soul.

The soul is our consciousness

It’s the bit sandwiched between body and spirit.
It is our mind and our personality, and it’s the part that never dies. As a medium, this is the part I connect to, in order to bring through those who have passed on with messages of reunion.

As a psychic this is the part we all access when doing readings, healing and energy work.

Our soul a little piece of God.

What? Wild, huh?
We are all tiny sparks of the big spark. The source. The creator. Call it what you like. If the word God isn’t your thing, take a word that suits, it won’t really matter because God won’t be offended.

But just ponder this – we’re all part of the big pattern the big picture and our light can never go out. The body has a shelf life, but we don’t.

And once we really get this, we’ve taken a big bite from the iceberg already.
What is a soul, anyway?

What is the Soul, Anyway?

Over the last six years, gradually nibbling away at the shit sandwich, I’ve taught myself to sit still, acknowledging thoughts, emotions and whatever comes and goes like the clouds I see right now, drifting across my window. This is a part of “sitting in the power”.

It’s getting to know my own soul and connecting to the essence of ‘me’, and then, through that, the essence of all. In fact, didn’t Jesus say something similar about the only way to God is through him? Meaning the soul?

It’s Not Easy.

Which is why so many give up, discouraged by the inner work needed. Inner work is one thing no one can run from. It catches up with us one way or another.

Soul expansion is an integral aspect of training for the psychic and mediumship arts, and there’s no shortcut.

The spirit within must be found, cherished and healed in order for the greater soul work to happen. We must eat the shit sandwich, and wash it down with a pint of self love and acceptance.

Perhaps reading this, you’re inspired to have another go at that psychic course that’s gathering space dust on the desktop.

Or pull out a meditation to sit with, or even journal a bit on what the fears are to take that next spiritual step.

Whatever it is, know that this is also part of soul expansion and a mother tiny step along your path to connecting to your own soul.

Maybe even rest the phone down for a minute and gaze out the window, to touch your own soul.

It’s the small magic of everyday inner work that make the big magic, don’t you think?

Love to hear your thoughts and comments.
